Its designed to give you that piece of mind, and should do exactly that, if a disk fails in raid array, just simply pull out the failed disk and replace it with a new one and it will rebuild the volume albeit it will take around 24hrs and you will be good to go. I do agree with you though about media being precious, even thought it is just media, but it takes a long time to rip, sort and arrange and I too wouldn't want to lose it either, thats why I am using a NAS.
